Category Definitions, Fees & Specific Rules
There are 4 types of categories: Written, Visual, Digital, and Integrated/Special. All submitters are responsible for ensuring that their submissions conform to the category definitions and restrictions. All submissions must adhere to the Rules & Eligibility.
IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR 2014-2015 - Hard copies are no longer required for submissions in written categories. Please read instructions below.
All packages of hard-copy submissions (if required) must be accompanied by a Master Entry Form confirming submissions and payment. Master Entry Forms are generated after you complete the online submission process.Hard copies will be accepted until Tuesday, February 17 at 5pm (ET)

For the categories Best Feature Article (Trade and Professional) and Magazine of the Year (Trade and Professional), please note the "professional" category includes professional and general business publications, while the "trade" category is for manufacturing and trade publications. Magazines uncertain about their category may enter whichever they feel best represents their background and audience, but may not enter both.
WRITTEN CATEGORIES
Are open to content from all eligible print magazines, tablet magazines and magazine websites, except where noted in the restrictions. These awards recognize insight, depth of research and excellent writing skills.
Submission Requirements: *IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR 2014/2015*
Upload a PDF of the complete article (even if from a digital platform). Hard copies are no longer required for the written categories. However note that all PDF documents uploaded during the submission process must have a resolution of 200 dpi and be printable on 8.5 X 11” paper. No double-page spreads. Additionally, please make sure that all text is no closer than 0.5" to the edge of the page.

Best Profile of a Person |
A feature article offering readers insight into the unique leadership and colourful qualities of an individual who has made a valuable contribution to his/her company, industry, trade or profession.

A feature article offering readers insight into a company, organization or trade/professional group, which has demonstrated excellence in its operational practices.

Best Regularly Featured Department or Column |
Three examples of a single, regularly appearing department or column from three different issues.

Best Feature Article—Professional |
Any in-depth feature dealing with subjects, events or developments of importance to a professional publication’s readers and industry.

A feature article informing readers how to do their jobs better, more efficiently, more productively, etc.

The emphasis should be on direct instruction to the reader rather than on case studies or examples, although they may be used in the article. Do not enter news stories, editorials or analysis.

Best One-Of-A-Kind Article |
Any article that does not meet the criteria in any of the above written categories. The intent is to make the competition inclusive and allow for entries that are not easily classified.

VISUAL CATEGORIES
Are open to content from all eligible print magazines, tablet magazines and magazine websites, except where noted in the restrictions. These awards recognize the special contribution that designers, illustrators and photographers, together with editors, make to effective communications.
Submission Requirements: For all categories except Best Art Direction of a Complete Issue, upload a PDF of the complete article or spread accompanying the visual submission. No hard copies are required.
For Best Art Direction of a Complete Issue, upload a PDF of the issue cover, and submit four (4) original issues of the magazine with a copy of the Entry Form taped to each issue. (Entry Forms are generated after you complete the online submission process.)
Tablet Magazine submitters must enter the URL to their iTunes or web page where judges can download (free) the issue to be judged.

DIGITAL CATEGORIES
Are open to content from all tablet magazines and magazine websites, except where noted in the restrictions.
Submission Requirements: Submit a URL(s) plus a screen shot (PDF format) which must be uploaded when completing the online entry form. The site will be evaluated live - archived links are permitted. For sites requiring registration, please provide the judges with user IDs and passwords to provide them with access for judging throughout the late winter and spring of 2015.
Tablet Edition submitters must enter the URL to their iTunes or web page where judges can download (free) and/or view the issue to be judged.

A Web site that successfully fulfills its editorial mission, effectively serves its audience, maximizes use of the Web and represents the highest journalistic standards. The sites will be judged on excellence of content, interactivity, rich media, design, navigation and community tools. Entries may consist of one main URL and up to three additional sub-URLs in the same domain (to highlight specific features).

An original package of related or thematic editorial content produced by a Magazine Website that best serves its intended audience by maximizing the potential of web-based publishing, and that reflects collaboration by editors and content creators. Elements may include but are not limited to written content, blogs, video, photography, data visualization, illustration, social media and user-generated content.

Open to students and magazine writers with a maximum of 2 years’ experience in professional journalism. Open to nonfiction work only. Eligible work must be at least 1000 words. Articles published in university/college magazines are eligible. Candidates must not have published any magazine work longer than 1000 words prior to 2013. One entry per person. |
Submission requirements: Applications consist of an uploaded PDF file of the article, as well as a letter of reference from a teacher, mentor, art director or colleague, attesting to the candidate’s eligibility and providing context for the submitted work.

Professional Magazine of the Year |
This award will go to the professional publication that displays overall excellence in content and design, and that most consistently mirrors its mandate/mission (as published in the media kit) and most effectively engages and serves the needs of its readers.

Submission requirements: Submit FIVE sets of any three issues from the year 2014. (In the case where a publication only publishes twice per year, five sets of the two issues will suffice.) Editors must include a one-page letter cover letter with the submission, which will A) Outline the mandate of the publication and B) Summarize the publication's achievements during the year, which include examples of compelling packaging, mix, reviews, reader feedback, writing and reporting, among other things.
